Should we ask DPR to present to APACC? (2024)

APACC-

DPRlaunchedtheir new "Ready2Play" master planning effort, which will look at parks in theDistrictfor the next 20 years. They state that they are not just considering their own properties, but"this effort aims to look holistically at all parks and recreational opportunities in the District of Columbia" including potential cooperative management agreements with NPS.

They have some virtual meetings about it coming up, but they also offer to meet with community groups individually. Would webe interested in hosting them and inviting people to join us to hear more about their plans, and discuss our priorities for parks along the riverand in the neighborhoods? It could be for members, or we could host a more public session?

Hi Erin,

I think it would be good to start by doing this with our members, and then look to host a wider forum. There are a lot of questionsabout how they will gather input, and APACC can definitely be a huge help with that.

I agree with presenting virtually to APAAC members. I would hesitate to encourage them presenting to the communityunless they will be one on one sessions or groups smaller than 10 (due to Covid).

Present to APACC first, to the general community later. The will allow APACC to help guide and work with what the community presentation includes. APACC can also be involved with the outreach to insure community saturation with the outreach.

Parks, recreation and naturalspace are issuesthat DC Sierra Club has a strong interest in. This could be an APACC undertaking that Sierra Club would be activelyengaged with. We've been brainstorming some on the RFK site in recentmonths and have been thinking about best management practices for parks and open space in conjunctionwith recreation. I saw member organizations express interest in"Ready2Play", but will APACC have a lead for this? Sierra Club would like to dig in, help out, and collaborate with APACCorganizations on this initiative.

The United Nations CO2 Emissions Gap Reporthas been published annually for the past decade. Each year it compares where greenhouse gasemissions are heading against where they need to be in order to avoid the worstconsequences of global warming and highlights the best ways to close the gap. This year’s report makes plain that only withdrastic and rapid action can we avoid widespread and disastrous impacts ofwarming. TheUN reports that CO2emission (and other greenhouse gasses) trends are leading to a rise in Earth’saverage temperature as much as 3.9 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit) bythe end of the century. The Paris Climate Change Accord, which the US hasannounced it no longer supports, agreed to hold warming to below 2 degrees (C)compared with preindustrial levels; the current rate of warming is nearly twicethat. To remain on track for holding warmingto no more than 2 degrees (C)globalgreenhouse gas emissions need to begin dropping by 7.6 percent each year beginningin 2020. Every government, company andperson have to be part of the solution.
