6:27 PM, A sad note to start: The AHSAA announced tonight that former Director of Officials Greg Brewer has passed away at age 65. Brewer began officiating in 1976 and joined the AHSAA as an assistant director in 1985. He became Director of Officials in 1988 and remained in that position through 2016. Upon retirement, he moved to Huntsville to be near his family.
“It truly saddens us all,” said AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs. “He has meant so much to the AHSAA, its member schools and they thousands of contest officials he mentored and trained throughout his career as the AHSAA Director of Officials. Our heart and prayers go out to his immediate family, our own AHSAA family, and to the officiating family he helped create across this state.”
6:23 PM, Interesting note: An interesting note from my buddy Randy Kennedy this week. Alabama teams played 23 games against out-of-state teams in the first two weeks, going 11-12 overall in those games. Alabama was 7-2 against teams from Florida, 1-0 against Mississippi, 1-1 against Tennessee but just 2-10 against teams from Georgia. Ouch.
6:19 PM, Huge game in Cullman: Bearcats host rival Hartselle. Cullman is 2-0 after wins over Mars Hill (13-10) and Jasper (42-21). Hartselle also is 2-0 after wins over Austin (45-17) and Jackson-Olin (39-6). Bryan Moore’s Tigers are ranked No. 9 in this week’s ASWA Class 6A poll.
