SummaryPrepare patients for visual examinations. Assist optometrist with eye examinations and corrective procedures. Perform work with a focus on effective communication with the patient, coworkers and the physician. Demonstrate cooperation with coworkers while striving to ensure the highest level of patient care and “customer service,” representing EHN in a professional manner at all times.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position does not have supervisory responsibility but will provide guidance to employees and/or assist with orientation and training of new employees of the work group.
Essential Functions
- Communicate with patients in a professional and courteous manner; introduce self and explain role to the patient and/or the patient’s family; acquaint patient with clinic procedures, and inform the patient of the purpose of all tests to be performed and how the patient may be affected during those tests.
- Record patient medical histories and help prepare patients for vision examinations; assist with tests that help ensure the accurate diagnosis and treatment of a diseased eye.
- Perform preliminary examination of patients; conduct pre-testing such as visual acuity, color vision, stereo acuity, depth perception, pupil reflexes, visual field testing, pressure inside the eye, and blood pressure.
- Explain treatment procedures to the patient.
- Educate the patient on proper care and use of prescribed contact lenses.
- Assist with eye exercises; assist with and/or administer vision therapy treatment.
- Maintain patient records and schedules.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, including contact lens trials and contact lenses.
- Ensure work area and exam rooms are clean, orderly and properly prepped for patients.
- Clean and maintain ocular equipment; ensure equipment is in good working condition; perform minor maintenance and repair.
- Ensure that services and products are appropriate to meeting patient needs and work is performed in an efficient, timely and accurate manner.
- Demonstrate team values through cooperation and consideration of coworkers; foster goodwill among coworkers by providing assistance when needed and sharing information that helps others do their jobs; interact with tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
- Effectively communicate with coworkers, doctors and patients; share information appropriately and complete the communication circle with follow-up as needed; communicate in a positive, upbeat manner while refraining from complaining, gossiping, or engaging in conversations of a negative tone.
- Protect confidential patient information, and use good judgment in sharing patient information in a manner that is consistent with patient care and current laws and regulations, including HIPAA.
- Adhere to all safety standards as established by company policy and OSHA requirements.
- Perform work in compliance with company policy, department procedures and regulatory requirements, including State and Federal laws and regulations.
Secondary Functions
- In smaller clinics, may assist with optical services, such as dispensing, repair, and minor adjustments of eye glasses.
- In smaller clinics, may assist with front desk duties, such as greeting and checking in patients, answering phones and scheduling appointments.
- Other duties which may be necessary or desirable to serve the patient and support the success of the department or the company overall.
Education and/or Experience; Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations (Minimum Requirements):
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of one year experience preferred.
- Must be certified as a Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA), Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT), or National Contact Lens Examiner (NCLE); or have the ability to obtain certification within 180 days of being hired.
- An equivalent combination of experience, training and certification that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the successful performance of the essential job duties.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Must be computer literate.
- Must possess basic math skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of optical terminology.
- Ability to handle busy schedules,
- Must be highly organized and self-motivated, and be able to rely on their own judgment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a genuine desire to help people.
- Ability to work cooperatively and interact in a professional and respectful manner with physicians, staff, vendors and patients at all times.
- Ability to address patient complaints and resolve problems.
- Skill in handling difficult patients successfully and respectfully.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Must be detail oriented.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, and a willingness to rotate to various worksites as needed.
