Son of nobility, hero to the people, and quite the dancer.

While all games love combat, it is rare to see one reward you for killing your friends. And yet, Baldur's Gate 3 finds a way. Hard as it may be emotionally, murdering one of the recruitable companions provides an interesting reward. So if you want to get your hands on the Infernal Robes, brace yourself for the challenge - killing Karlach won't be easy.

What Are The Infernal Robes

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Infernal Robes (2)

The Infernal Robes are a set of Very Rare magical robes that can be obtained early in Act 1, although there's a good chance you missed it since the prerequisites are very demanding.

The Infernal Robes give the wearer a base AC of 10, as well as increase their Armor Class by 1. The Infernal Robes also grant the wearer Fire resistance. Lastly, the wearer can cast Fire Shield: Warm once per Long Rest while they have the robes donned.

The robes will be gifted to Wyll, but since Wyll is recruited, you can give the Infernal Robes to whoever you want after the cutscene is completed. Overall, the Infernal Robes are a very powerful piece of armor, especially for how early they can be obtained.

During a camp cutscene in Act 1, Mizora arrives and bestows the robes to Wyll as a reward for completing his mission. The only way to get the Infernal Robes is to kill Karlach and recruit Wyll.

If Karlach is not dead, then Mizora will not gift the robes. Likewise, even if Karlach is dead, you must have Wyll in your camp for Mizora to appear.

The order in which you accomplish these prerequisites does not matter. As such, you can choosehow to complete the prerequisite tasks - and there are quite a few routes that will lead to you earning the Infernal Robes.

The Quest "The Blade Of Frontiers"

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Infernal Robes (4)

The best way to get the Infernal Robes is tohave the quest "Blade of Frontiers," since this is the quickest way to unlock the necessary cutscene. The Infernal Robes are meant to be a reward for finishing the first portion of this quest, so having it marked as active will speed things along.

"The Blade of Frontiers" is Wyll's companion questline, and will automatically be earned once you speak to Wyll and recruit him. From here, you can follow the questmarkers to help you track down the mission objectives.

Where To Find Wyll

Wyll can be found inside the Druid Grove after the goblin raid. You will need to make sure Wyll survives the raid then speak to him inside the camp. He is on a wooden platform training the tiefling children (X: 203 Y: 556).

When you speak to Wyll, a shared vision will speak about a one-horned devil, and Wyll explains that he has been tasked with killing this devil. From here, you will have the option to recruit Wyll by either letting him join your party or by sending him to your camp. Once you do, the quest "The Blade of Frontiers" will activate.

You do not need to recruit Wyll right away, however, you will eventually need to recruit him in order to get the Infernal Robes — let's save time by doing it in this moment.

The Quest "Our Fiery Friend"

Of course, as you may have guessed, the devil Wyll is hunting is Karlach, and she too is a recruitable companion. When you speak with her, you will have the option to recruit her, opening up her companion questline "Our Fiery Friend." Unfortunately, if you want the Infernal Robes, you will have to kill her.

Where To Find Karlach

Karlach can be found on the eastern side of the Risen Road on a small island in the river (X: 111 Y: 499).

When you approach Karlach, a cutscene will begin. If you have spoken to Wyll, you will have the option to attack her as you recognize that she is the devil he is hunting. Likewise, if Wyll is in your party, he isimmediately hostile towards her, and you will be prompted to attack her or to let her speak her piece.

Regardless, you can also choose to attack her simply because she is reminiscent of the Hells.

If Wyll is in your party, you must kill Karlach here. If Wyll is not in your party, you can recruit Karlach for a moment, but ultimately will still need to kill her to get the robes.

If you recruit Karlach while Wyll is in your party, it will be impossible to get the Infernal Robes.

Killing Karlach will end the questline "Our Fiery Friend," and there will be no questline rewards as the game progresses.

How To Kill Karlach

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Infernal Robes (10)

Whether it's now or later, Karlach must die in order to get the Infernal Robes. Luckily, killing Karlach is quite easy - combat-wise, at least. The only hard part is holding back the tears.

The rewards for completing Karlach's companion questline are much better than the Infernal Robes. Because of this, we do not recommend killing Karlach if it is your first time playing the game, as ultimately recruiting her will be more fulfilling.

You will have two opportunities to kill Karlach: one on the Risen Road if you follow the questmarkers for "The Blade of Frontiers" questline, and one later at your camp if you have recruited her.

Since you're killing Karlach anyway, you may as well side with the paladins of Tyr in order to get the extra reward from Anders for turning in Karlach's head to him.

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Infernal Robes (11)

If you do not kill Karlach on the Risen Road, Wyll will attempt to kill her at your camp the next time you rest, whether you recruited him or not. Make sure you choose the dialogue options that go against Karlach so you don't end up de-escalating the situation.

The trick to killing Karlach is to try and eliminate her before she takes her turn. Her low Dexterity means she will fall later in the Initiative order, and taking her out before she Rages will make the battle go swiftly.

If you don't recruit Karlach, she won't level up to your party's level, meaning she will have lower stats when you fight her.

Karlachcannot be revived once you kill her, even if you have recruited her, so make sure you are ready to suffer the consequences to get the Infernal Robes.

Meeting Mizora

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Infernal Robes (12)

Once you have recruited Wyll and helped him kill Karlach, Mizora will appear in your camp the next time you Long Rest. Mizora is a powerful devil from Avernus and also Wyll's warlock patron.

Technically the cutscene with Mizora will happen whether or not Karlach is dead. However, if Karlach is not dead by the time Mizora appears, it will be impossible to get the Infernal Robes, so make sure you finish the job before your next Long Rest.

If Karlach is dead, Mizora will congratulate Wyll on a job well done and gift him with the Infernal Robes. You will also notice that Wyll does not grow horns if you kill Karlach, since Mizora does not punish him for disobedience.

With Karlach's dead body in the dirt and your new robes donned, hopefully you're ready to take on the rest of the challenges Act 1 has to offer, even if your camp is a little quieter without Karlach's humming.
